Our 5 berth motorsailer “Uncle Finley” was “born” in 1986 and is in great condition. In the nine years we have had him he has been well-maintained and a lot of improvements made. He has a GRP hull with bilge keels and has a 28hp Volvo Penta 2003 inboard diesel engine which has been regularly maintained and serviced; the injectors were professionally reconditioned in 2017. He has a tiller in the cockpit and a steering wheel at the interior helm position, and the sails are fully controlled from the cockpit as all lines are led aft. The main sail has slab reefing, stackpack and lazy jacks, and along with the boom they were all new in 2014. The headsail has roller furling and the sail and furlex were new in 2017; Uncle Finley’s standing rigging was renewed in 2016. A new Harken self-tailing 2 speed winch was fitted in 2014 and there is a second self-tailing winch and a single control winch. Uncle Finley also has a full cockpit canopy and a separate bimini.
He has a S/S stemhead anchor roller with a 25lb CQR anchor and 40 meters of 8mm chain, and a manual windlass. At the stern there is a stainless steel boarding ladder and a kedge anchor and spool.
Berthed in the Crinan Canal Uncle Finley has a boat safety scheme certificate valid until 2021, and has fire extinguishers, fire blanket and a CO2 and smoke alarm fitted with a 10 year battery. There is a manual and an electric bilge pump, a horse-shoe lifebelt and holder, and an automatic fog-horn with tannoy and siren.
Navigation lights have all been fitted with LED bulbs and there are dual display Nasa clipper Log/speed, Echo sounder and Wind instruments for cockpit and interior helm. At the interior helm there is a Plastimo Contest 130 Binnacle mounted compass and there is an M-Tech SX35 DSC VHF radio and masthead antenna and a back-up VHF radio. Auto-pilot is by an Autohelm Pilot ST2000+ (2016) and there is a Furuno GPS.
He is equipped for 240v shore power and there are 3 sockets. Two battery chargers and a battery management system look after the four gel batteries, (two were fitted in 2014 and two replaced new this year), and there is 12v lighting throughout.
There are 5 berths in two cabins and all upholstery, foam and curtains were renewed in 2018. The interior woodwork is teak and teak veneer, and the floor of the main saloon and the heads is teak and holly. The headlining in the heads and the main saloon was renewed in 2014 and 2016 respectively. A new Plastimo Neptune 4500 cooker with twin burners, oven and grill was fitted in 2017, and there is a front opening fridge and a separate top-opening freezer (the freezer is currently disconnected as we don’t use it.) There is a pressurised hot and cold water system and heating is by Eberspacher with three outlets – one in main cabin, one in heads and one in forward cabin. There is ample storage throughout, including a wet-locker and the boat is well-suited to a couple sailing, with a nice wide pilot bunk and a comfortable double bed in the main saloon for occasional visitors. The inside steering position makes it an ideal boat for our less than ideal weather, and the bilge keels make Uncle Finley suitable for drying harbours. We are hoping to move to a bigger boat and therefore we have to reluctantly part with our dear “Uncle Finley”.
