Edward Dubois designed Westerly Merlin 28 for sale. Built in 1985 has a modern appearance with overall length of 8.74 metres, beam 3 metres, and fin keel with draft 1.6 metres. ‘Alerion’ offers spacious below deck accommodation with separate fore and aft cabins and heads. The saloon area has a folding table to seat six, and under-seat storage. The generous galley has a double hob, grill and oven, insulated food locker, sink and plenty of storage space. The chart table has a Yeoman chart plotter linked to GPS and DSC radio.
Alerion has a fractional rig with roller reefing headsail and slab reefing main sail. All lines lead back to the cockpit making it suitable for single handed sailing, and ideal for a couple or small family. In addition to the genoa a spinnaker, asymmetric sail and storm jib are included. The spray hood and sail cover have been replaced recently and a new back stay fitted this year. Steering is by tiller with a transom hung rudder. A deep cockpit locker contains an 80-litre diesel tank supplying the Bukh20 engine. Shaft drive and twin blade fixed propeller with rope cutter. New hull anode and shaft anode fitted.
Other equipment includes; 4person life raft, autohelm, primary CQR anchor and kedge anchor, Sat Nav, VHF DSC radio, marine fm radio/cd player, mooring lines, fenders, dan buoy, etc etc.
Following lift out for cleaning off and antifouling it has been established that osmosis has affected the hull. A professional survey has been carried out which concludes that the hull and keel remain sound and fit for continued service, and comments that the craft appears in general good order. It is appreciated that the osmosis will depress the resale value of the craft and we have therefore made a substantial reduction to the asking price.
