Thursday 4th of July

High Tide is 13:39 and Centaurs should be able to get over the bar at the harbour entrance from about 3 hours before to about 3 hours after High Tide.

Harbour Walk starts at 10:30 next to the Tollgate Café adjacent to the Bembridge Sailing Club. This is on the opposite side of the harbour entrance and there is a water taxi that will take you to the beach: the cost is £2.50 per person. You can walk around the harbour from the Duver rather than take the water taxi but it will take about 40 minutes. Taxi by road will be about £10.

The Harbour walk is flat and will not require special footwear; however, there is a short section of steps across a weir which means the walk is probably unsuitable for wheelchairs. The walk will pass through a rare salt-marsh environment so bring binoculars, bird books and keep an eye out for the ultra-rare Bembridge beetle. The walk will take about 2 hours.

New Arrivals. You will be warmly welcomed at the Centaur Party – 18:00 till 20:00. Bring your own food and drink and something to share. This will be in the Marquee at the head of the Duver Pontoons – please do not meet on the pontoons.

Friday 5th of July

High Tide is 14:27 and Centaurs should be able to get over the bar at the harbour entrance from about 3 hours before to about 3 hours after High Tide.

Beach Walk 10:00 till 13:00.

This is a longer walk via the beach to the Bembridge Lifeboat Station, and back through the village. The beach is sandy with pebble stones, occasional London Clay outcrops on the shore which can be a little slippery but are easily avoided. Bembridge Ledges are interesting geologically and for the rich marine flora and fauna. Flat walking through the village and gentle downhill to the Sailing Club and Tollgate café. Walking shoes are recommended.

Beach BBQ 13:00 till 15:00

Bring your own BBQ food and drink and some to share. Also bring a disposable BBQ and, at the end of the Party, make sure it is completely out, dip it in the sea and then disposed of safely in the bins in the BBQ area for FULLY extinguished BBQs rather than bring them back to the harbour site. Please take care not to litter or pollute this site of special scientific interest.

Pirates Fancy dress for Boat and Crew 15:00 to 16:30 (Judging)

Dress your boat overall as a Pirate Ship with the Crew as dastardly Pirates.

The fancy dress will be judged on originality, enthusiasm, craziness, and “Pirateyness”. A prize donated by Jeweller Kim Styles will be awarded to the Winning Boat. (Judges Decision is final)

Centaur Race to the Nab Tower and back. Start is at 12:00. Be ready to depart your berth at 11:15 – Vessels will be directed to depart by Berthing staff.

This race is for Centaurs only. With a decent breeze, the default course will be straight out to the Nab tower and back – a distance of about 5 miles each way, but other shorter courses will be used if the wind is light. Details will be on the race entry form. The Boat that wins the race on handicap will be awarded the WOA Nab Trophy and the first across the finish line will be awarded the WOA Quay Lane Trophy. The latest time you will be able to get back into the Harbour will be about 18:00 so if it looks like you are still out at the Nab after 16:00 you’ll need to turn on the engine and head back – fast! or you’ll miss your meal. You will have a head tide coming back into the harbour.

Rally Evening meal from 18:30.

A Hog Roast, in the marquee at the Duver Marina. The ‘Horse Box’ pop up bar will be there all evening together, hopefully with the Duver Café & Galley Locker for other liquid refreshments. The cost of the Hog Roast with side salad around £15 per head. Presentation of prizes and a talk by Dave Selby – then final adieu.

If you have any instruments (musical that is) why not give us a tune.

Sunday 7th of July

High Tide is 16:06 and Centaurs should be able to get over the bar at the harbour entrance from about 3 hours before to about 3 hours after High Tide.

The Other Centaur Race: 10:00 till 11:30

This is for everyone.

The Beach will be decked out with Gymkhana jumps just a few inches high and Racers will need to look like a Mythical Greek Centaur. You can either don fancy dress such as a Panto Horse suit without the head or if you want to race but don’t have a costume then a crew member holding on to your waist and making the back end of a horse will do. In the event of a tie over the course the best Centaur Costume (in the opinion of the Judges) will win. Prize will be donated by Force4.

Time for a quick lunch and then goodbye.

You might also like to go the Bay Watch Café on the beach towards Nodes Point or book lunch (in advance) at the Yacht Club or Sailing Club, or just stay with others in the marquee.

As this article goes to print we have 79 Westerly Boats now interested of which 69 are Centaurs. Boats are coming from Anglesea in the west and the River Orwell in the east and most harbours in between.

Bring your Centaur to the Rally, meet other Centaur skippers and let’s make this a great party and Celebration of the Westerly Centaur, See you there!
