South Coast: Channel Crossing
5th August 2018
Six Westerly’s made it to Cherbourg on Sunday August 5th. for now what has been nicknamed ” David’s Dash”. Unfortunately David Symonds was not able to make it this year but drafted in Martyn and Anne Langford (Starquest) to lead the event.
Boats came variously from Lymington, Gosport and Chichester Harbour. All experienced light winds which involved motor sailing. The shipping lanes were very busy including a large rig under tow and a container vessel not under command and drifting west at 2.5 knots.
The berthing in the Marina had been reserved on ‘P’pontoon so all boats were together.
Two boats were going to leave on the Monday. “Salty” (Griffon Club) to St.Vaast and “Sassy” (Konsort) back to the UK. As quite often happens at Cherbourg, Monday morning dawned with a sea fog, so nobody left.
This produced a respectable number for the combined pontoon party and BBQ on Monday evening. Which was acclaimed as a great opportunity to get together, particularly for those who had not been on a south coast group event before or crossed the Channel previously.
The final roundup of boats was “Optimist” , “Sassy” , “Salty” ,”Starquest” “Huldra” and ” Kerry Dancer”.
“Huldra” left mid morning on Tuesday to sail down to Alderney.
“Sassy” “Salty” and “Kerry Dancer” left very early on Tuesday for the passage back to the UK.
Unfortunately “Salty” had an engine problem and ended up being towed back to Cherbourg for investigation.
A reminder for any WOA members intending to visit Cherbourg, to present a membership card to receive the discount which is available. As a guide this reduces the cost for a 36 foot boat to just over €26 a night including electricity and free showers. The author of this report is not on commission!
