South Coast Group Winter Walk
Godshill – Castle Hill.
What started off as a damp, wet and dark winter’s morning ended quite nicely as the rain held off and glimpses of sunshine broke through during the walk.
A very good number of hearty sailors and a number of sea –dogs turned up from far and wide at various intervals during the morning, and the Landlady of “The Fighting Cocks” pub opened her doors at 09:30 to provide coffees and warmth in the lounge.
We eventually left the cosy lounge at 10:45 and headed off on the proposed route in good spirits: unfortunately, the detailed map provided wasn’t that detailed, and it didn’t take long to take a wrong turn here and there.
However, with some intrepid navigators at the helm they had us back on track after a slight detour of a construction site.
The walk eventually took us along fields and woodland paths and then continued to a stream-side hamlet on the edge of Castle Hill with views across the Avon Valley before returning uphill to Godshill and the safe haven of “The Fighting Cocks”. The dogs were making the most of the countryside and Lily put in a tremendous effort before succumbing at the very last and had to be carried over the line by Jan.
We then retired once more to “The Fighting Cocks” for lunch and a well-earned beverage or two. I can’t say enough of the landlady and staff, who were wonderful hosts, and couldn’t do enough to help everyone.
