South Coast: Solent Race
13th May 2018
For the Westerly Shield (Handicap Trophy) and Jacres Bell (Line Honours) – Sunday 13th May 2018
Sunday dawned with bright sunshine, but very little wind, and the start was delayed by half an hour waiting for a reasonable breeze to fill in from the south west. Five boats were on the start line, and, with the first leg from the entrance to Beaulieu river to Hampstead Ledge buoy, UNITY, with her rather threatening black rig got away well, tacking out into the favourable tide. The wind got up to a useful force 3, but faded after a couple of hours, leading to a long run back against the tide. It was decided to shorten course at the Elephant Boatyard buoy on the island shore. MOONSTORM was first home, to take line honours, followed by UNITY, SASSY and PETREL. MERLOT retired after misreading the course flag.
Jacres Bell: MOONSTORM
1st UNITY (corrected time 2hrs 48mins 14secs)
2nd MOONSTORM (plus 28 secs!)
3rd PETREL (plus 17 mins)
4th SASSY (plus 35 mins)
Prizes will be awarded at the SCG AGM in November at the Royal Lymington Yacht Club.
