East Coast: Walton Rally
23rd June 2017
Thirteen westerlys made their way up the narrow Foundry Channel & into the W&F Y.C. basin which was a new experience for most. The 18 feet wide gate seems very tight when approaching in a 12 foot wide yacht. This entrance is only accessable at one hour before HW.
Friday afternoon saw an entertaining boules match before retiring to the club for a meal & refreshments in the evening.
Saturday saw the last 3 boats arrive & berth whilst those who arrived on friday walked to the end of Walton pier to view the RNLI lifeboat.
Drinks & nibbles at 18-00 on & around Falcon were enjoyed before 28 members moved to the club for the main meal of roast beef, pork & turkey with all the trimmings followed by sweet coffee. The evening was then rounded off with a very special quiz designed & run by Bill Drew of Cloud Nine. Four teams competed & prizes went to the winning “Team One”.
Sunday saw another warm sunny day dawn for the planned walk to the Naze tower. The top affords a panoramic view of the backwaters, Wallet channel & Orwell and Stour river estuaries. The tower has various tea rooms along with several levels of picture galleries.
Three yachts had to leave on the Sunday tide but the remainder gathered for a BBQ at 16:00. Sheltering from the blustery wind, the f/cast rain only amounted to a few spots and by 20:00 all retired to the club house for a fairwell drink and a noisy chat.
Monday saw the departure of the remaining boats either having to wait locally for the flood tide the following day, or punch the ebb up the Wallet to the Blackwater.
Boats attending; Falcon, Travelling Light, Hunters Moon, Cloud Nine, Rafiki, Revolution Rumours, Camilla, Reward, Trumpeter, Sandpiper, Permata, Rumpteskip. Also by road were crews from Kismet, Limelight & Norma Ann.
Many thanks to all who came particularly my helpers Neil, Bill D, Bill W, also the staff of the club who worked tirelessly to make our weekend such a success.
Andy & Carol, Falcon.
